Ada — Area briefs are for non-profit events and organizations. Briefs must be submitted at least five days before the event by bringing them into the office, emailing them to adanewslifestyle@cableone.net or faxing them to 580-332-8841. Briefs will not be accepted over the telephone. Church-related briefs are published only on Friday’s religion page. All activities may be subject to change due to weather conditions. 

 

FRIDAY

MARCH 14, 2014

• Vanoss Elementary School has set its pre-k pre-enrollment date for Friday, March 14. Pre-enrollment will take place in the Vanoss Library from 8 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. All students who will be 4 years old by Sept. 1, 2014, are eligible for enrollment in the pre-k program. All students who are pre-enrolling will be given an academic readiness screening, in addition to a hearing screening. Speech screenings may be available by request. Those who wish to enroll their children must bring the child’s Social Security card, birth certificate, shot record, proof of residence and CDIB card, if applicable.

• A Parent Advisory Committee meeting will be held to review activities and expenditures under Title I, II, and VI schoolwide programs. The meeting is open to the public and will be held in the Vanoss Elementary Conference Room at 5 p.m.

MARCH 15, 2014

• The 120th Supply and Service Battalion will have its 16th reunion at 5 p.m. at the Chickasaw Nation Community Center in Ada. 

• Ada Recycling Coalition is sponsoring its 16th annual telephone book collection contest for the Pontotoc County area. ARC will give the winning classroom (a minimum of 100 phone books) at each participating school money for a pizza party. ARC will also give $150 to the school that collects the most phone books. • American Legion Post 72 hosts bingo each Saturday night. Mini games begin at 6 p.m. and regular bingo begins at 7 p.m. Snack bar items are available. 

• Traditional country music every third Saturday at 7 p.m.  with special guest and the Country Pride Band at Mary’s Music Barn, located three and three-fourths miles south and one-fourth mile west of Stonewall on the Jesse Highway. • Oklahoma Farm Bureau Safety Services is presenting an auto accident prevention course March 17 and 18 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Pontotoc County Farm Bureau Office, 1027 W. Main St., with instruction on how to improve one’s driving skills. Upon earning the Oklahoma Motor Vehicle Accident Prevention Course Certificate, one would be eligible to receive a discount on auto insurance. The class is open to the public. • Free tax help and free e-filing are offered Mondays through April 14 by AARP Tax-Aide at the Ada Masonic Lodge Hall, 730 Crestview. All ages are welcome. For appointment, call 580-436-4494 weekdays between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.

• Ada Prime Timers meet at J.D.’s Cafeteria for the regular monthly meeting. Visitation begins at 5:30 p.m. The meal will be served at 6 p.m. Linda Trammell, director of TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) will present the program. Guests are welcome. 

• GriefShare support group meets from 7-9 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Ada. GriefShare is for people grieving the death of loved ones. Groups meet weekly for 13 weeks to help each individual face the challenge and move toward rebuilding his or her life. There is no charge to attend this grief support group. • Al-Anon meets at 8 p.m. each Tuesday at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.

• Divorce/Bereavement Support Group meets each Wednesday at 7 p.m. at The Compassion Outreach Center, 1124 Cradduck Road, Ada. The group offers support for those who have lost a loved one through divorce or death. For more information about this group, call Tom at 580-332-6506.
