Chickasaw Nation governor inducted into Historians Hall of Fame

Ada —

Chickasaw Nation Gov. Bill Anoatubby was inducted into the Oklahoma Historians Hall of Fame April 19 at the Frisco Conference Center in Clinton.

“It is a great honor to be accepted into the Oklahoma Historians Hall of Fame,” Anoatubby said.  “The Chickasaw Nation and Oklahoma have a deep and unique history, one that started before statehood. It is an honor to be recognized alongside those who have made an impact in preserving Oklahoma culture, traditions and history.”

Anoatubby, a native of Tishomingo, has served as governor since 1987. During his time in office, he has led the tribe through hugely successful and widely diverse business ventures. He remains instrumental in efforts to preserve and share Chickasaw history and culture, not only for tribal members but for all citizens. Preservation projects include restoration of the Chickasaw Capitol Building in Tishomingo and the Chickasaw White House in Emet, Okla.

Anoatubby’s leadership has resulted in the creation of The Chickasaw Press, Chickasaw Cultural Center in Sulphur, and feature films regarding important Chickasaw historical subjects.

He was honored during the annual awards luncheon of the Oklahoma Historical Society (OHS). The luncheon concluded a three-day OHS annual meeting which included a special reception, concert, and 24 speakers on topics relating to the theme Movin’ On: Mobility as a Dynamic Force in Oklahoma History.

Other honorees included William Corbett, Tahlequah, Eddie Faye Gates, Tulsa, and Max J. Nichols, New York City.
