People who remember cruising downtown Ada as teenagers can relive those days later this month.
The Ada Main Street program will host the fourth annual Cruising Main event from 7 to 10 p.m. June 28 on Main Street from Rennie to Stockton. There is no charge for admission, but people may buy commemorative T-shirts from Ada Main Street for $10 apiece.
The event does not include a classic car show, but the area between Main and 10th Streets on Rennie will be set aside for car buffs to show off their vintage and modern vehicles.
Radio station 106.5FM will host a live broadcast from the site, and people may bring lawn chairs and sit on the sidewalks to enjoy the show.
McSwain Theatre will join the fun by showing the movie American Graffiti at 2 and 7 p.m. Tickets for the movie are $3 for general admission, $2 for seniors and children under 12 or $5 for admission, popcorn and a drink.
Cruising Main Street started about four years ago as a way to promote downtown Ada, and it has become a favorite activity for Ada residents and out-of-towners alike, said Jennifer Johnston, program manager for Ada Main Street.
“I love it because when back when I was in high school in the early ‘90s, on Friday and Saturday nights that’s what the teenagers did,” she said Thursday. “We had fun, and it was just a safe thing to do.”
Main Street officials are encouraging downtown merchants to stay open later that night, in hopes that people will take advantage of the opportunity to dine and shop.
The event is designed to bring visitors into downtown Ada and promote local businesses, Johnston said.
“It’s just a very relaxing event,” she said. “I think people really look forward to it.”
