Outdated information blamed for poor review

Ada —

Teacher preparation programs at two Oklahoma universities aren’t giving students the tools they need to succeed, according to a new national ranking of collegiate education programs.

East Central University’s undergraduate elementary education program and Northeastern State University’s undergraduate special education program received dismal ratings in the National Council on Teacher Quality’s Teacher Prep Review, The Oklahoman reported in Wednesday’s editions. The newspaper said U.S. News and World Report distributed the report earlier this week.

The report flagged the programs at ECU and Northeastern State with consumer alerts, indicating that students enrolled in those programs were unlikely to receive effective training.

Dr. Brenda Walling, dean of ECU’s College of Education and Psychology, said the report relied on outdated information for its ratings. She said the authors gathered information from school syllabuses, textbooks and other documents but did not interview anyone familiar with ECU’s education programs.
