Retired educators attend state convention

Tulsa —

Several Ada area retired educators were among more than 400 members of the Oklahoma Retired Educators Association in attendance at the organization's annual state convention and House of Delegates in Tulsa May 17. Keynote speaker was Dr. Keith Ballard, superintendent of Tulsa Public Schools.

Founded in 1952, OREA is the recognized voice for Oklahoma's retired educators with members and local units in every county of the state.

Members were able to attend a variety of workshops geared to their interests and needs.

Several awards were presented to OREA members and others for achievements and service during the past year. Ruth Ann Taylor, Ada, was honored as the state Volunteer of the Year for her work in Pontotoc County.

Delegates heard an update on legislative issues, including efforts to create a permanent revolving account in the state treasury to gather funds for a cost-of-living benefits adjustment (COLA) for retired educators and other state retirees.

Attending from the Ada area were Lanny Sliger, Vaden Morgan, Charles Barrick, Tom Stephens, Ruth Ann Taylor, Terry Ford and Gerri Stephens.
