The Kathy Cox Elementary Educator Merit Award went to Shawna Skorepa, a first grade teacher at Sallie Gillentine Elementary in Hollis.

The Junior High Educator Merit Award went to Mary Kendrick, an eighth grade math teacher in Wilburton Public Schools.

Gregory Pierce of Grove Public Schools was named the High School Educator Merit Award winner. Pierce teaches English, speech and drama at Grove High School.

The Special Education Educator Merit Award was presented to Cindy Sandoval, a special education teacher in Moore.

Tammy Gill won the Non-Certified Merit Award. Gill is a paraprofessional at Mason Elementary.

Ada Junior High was awarded the School Character Award and Sara Burgener won the Teacher Character Award. Each of the character winners was awarded $2,500 to further character education.

Awards were presented by Professional Oklahoma Educators Foundation Chairman Dr. Floyd Coppedge, Professional Oklahoma Educators President Marsha Strunk and Executive Director Ginger Tinney. Dick Pryor, deputy director and managing editor of OETA, The Oklahoma Network, served as the master of ceremonies for the evening and Oklahoma 2013 Teacher of the Year, Elaine Hutchison, gave the keynote address.

The event was made possible by the generous donations of several individuals, businesses and legislators. “The Professional Oklahoma Educators Foundation is sincerely grateful for the generous gifts of our many donors” Tinney said. “Their dedication to supporting excellence in Oklahoma education is what makes it possible for us to honor so many incredible educators at this special event.”
