Ada — Area briefs are for non-profit events and organizations. Briefs must be submitted at least five days before the event by bringing them into the office, emailing them to adanewslifestyle@cableone.net or faxing them to 580-332-8841. Briefs will not be accepted over the telephone. Church-related briefs are published only on Friday’s religion page. All activities may be subject to change due to weather conditions.



WEDNESDAY

APRIL 17, 2013

• Byng Excellence in Education Foundation (BEEF) conducts its monthly meeting at 12 noon at Citizens Bank.

• Latta School’s Indian Education Parent Committee will meet at 5:30 p.m. in Room 111 in the Latta Middle School.  Business meetings will be conducted for JOM and Title VII programs.  All parents of JOM and Title VII students are invited to attend.

• Emotions Anonymous is meeting every Wednesday from 12 noon until 1 p.m. at Central Church of Christ, 820 Stadium Drive. For more information, phone  Kristina at (580) 279-4870.

• Divorce/Bereavement Support Group meets each Wednesday at 7 p.m. at The Compassion Outreach Center, 1124 Cradduck Road, Ada. This group offers support for those who have lost a loved one through divorce or death. For more information, phone Tom at 580-332-6506.

• A dance is conducted each Wednesday at Irving Community Center, 704 N. Oak, from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Cost is $6 per person and is open to the public.

APRIL 18, 2013

• Bread of Life Ministry’s community dinner is from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at Ada First Baptist Church, 521 S. Broadway.

• Pontotoc County Democrats meet at 7 p.m. in Room D on the north side of Pontotoc County Agri-plex to discuss the district meeting in Lawton and make future plans for the party.

• Fortnightly Study Club will have a spring luncheon and general meeting at noon  at the First Lutheran Church on Stadium Drive. Phyllis Danley will speak about the ECU Foundation. All members and former members are encouraged to attend as this may be one of the last meetings.  You will have a chance to share memories from the past and stories-funny, serious or otherwise. The departments are Modern Book, Music and Progressive Drama, plus the recently retired 21st Century Department. Phone Susan Schmidt at 235-5561 by April 13 for a reservation.

• Pontotoc County Retired Educators Association (PCREA) meets at 11 a.m. at Ada Elks Lodge for its regular monthly meeting and noon luncheon. The program will be a legislative update by OREA Executive Director Norman Cooper and Ada Hill, district director. Officers will also be installed.

APRIL 20, 2013

• Ethan Wright, Stratford, will be conducting a colt starting clinic, demonstrating how to properly start a young horse in the round pen, at 10 a.m. at the Pontotoc County Agri-plex. Wright is an accomplished horseman and trainer and incorporates a positive message for the handler as well as the horse. The event is free and open to the public. • NEC Code Update Class will be held at Pontotoc Technology Center, 601 W 33rd, from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. This class will satisfy the Oklahoma state mandatory six hour continuing education requirement for license renewal. This class is approved by the Oklahoma Construction Industries Board for electrical journeymen and electrical contractors. Six hours of CEU (no lunch break). Instructor is David Jackson. Cost of class is $75 paid prior to course and participants must have a valid ID and current electrical license number. Bring a current NEC Code book.A minimum of six people is required for class. • Maud Coon, local author, hosts a book signing from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Ada Public Library for her new children’s book, I Am a Big Sis Now. This book teaches the dangers of sibling rivalries and how to resolve conflicts peacefully. The author holds a bachelor of arts degree in psychology from the College of New Rochelle in New York.

• Mary’s Music Barn presents traditional country music, featuring Country Pride Band with special guest, the third Saturday of each month. Mary’s Music Barn is located three and one-half miles south of Stonewall on Jesse Highway. Turn right on McDonald Road.
