Chickasaw Nation to host robotics tournament

Ada —

Twenty-one teams from across the state will compete in the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) robotics tournament Saturday at Byng School Bertha Frank Teague Gymnasium.

The tournament is hosted by the Chickasaw Nation, which has been involved with the FIRST Robotics organization since 2008.

FTC is a robotics competition where teams of up to 10 students, each ages 14-18, work together to design, build and program a robot to compete on a 12-foot by 12-foot field. Team members apply math and science concepts and develop problem-solving and team-building skills.

During the tournament, teams build alliances with other teams as they compete for the opportunity to advance to the next level.

Qualifying teams from local tournaments advance to state championship tournaments. Winners at state tournaments advance to the World Championship Tournament in St. Louis, Mo.

Teams can also earn awards for robot design, community outreach and other accomplishments.

This free, family-friendly event offers an opportunity to introduce youth to Science Technology,  Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), and to encourage students to get involved in school and area STEM programs.

Opening ceremonies will begin at 11:30 a.m. The Chickasaw Nation Honor Guard will present the colors.
