Area briefs are for non-profit events and organizations. Briefs must be submitted at least five days before the event by bringing them into the office, emailing them to adanewslifestyle@cableone.net or faxing them to 580-332-8841. Briefs will not be accepted over the telephone. Church-related briefs are published only on Friday’s religion page. All activities may be subject to change due to weather conditions. 

 

TUESDAY

APRIL 9, 2013

• Pauls Valley Library Book Club will meet at 1 p.m. at the library to discuss The Shell Seekers by Rosamunde Pilcher. This story of a woman in her 60’s is a reflection of her life with her artist father, the children she has raised, and how she should spend the rest of her life.  The book for April will be “The Language of Flowers” by Vanessa Diffenbaugh. All readers are welcome. 

• American Legion Auxiliary Unit 72 meets at 5 p.m. upstairs of Ada Public Library. For more  information, phone 580-265-9222 or 580-436-0433.

• Allen High School hosts a blood drive from 9 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at Allen High School, 201 N. Denver Street in Allen. For more information or to make an appointment, contact Oklahoma Blood Institute at 877-340-8777 or visit us at www.obi.org. 

• Pontotoc County Health and Safety Fair takes place from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on the Pontotoc County courthouse plaza. Free hot dogs provided by Citizens Bank. Meet county officers from 10-11 a.m. Courthouse tours will be given from 11 a.m. until noon.

• Compassionate Freinds Ada area chapter meets at 6:30 p.m. the second Tuesday of each month  in the parlor of First United Methodist Church, 129 W. 14th Street. This non-profit organization is for those grieving the death of a child. 

• A new GriefShare Group begins at First Baptist Church of Ada, 521 S. Broadway. The sessions are from 7-9 p.m.  Contact Debbie Wall at 580-777-2711 or FBC of Ada at 580-332-4121 for more information.  

• Al-Anon meets at 8 p.m. each Tuesday at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.

• Valley View Regional Hospital Auxiliary is sponsoring its annual jewelry sale. The sale will be Wednesday and Thursday, April 10-11. Most items are $6, but there are also purses, scarves and many boutique items. All funds raised by the sale are used by the auxiliary to support patient care at Valley View. April 10 sale hours at 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and April 11 hours are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. The sale will occur on the ground floor of Valley View Regional Hospital.

• East Central University will conduct a transfer enrollment day on Wednesday, April 10, at ECU’s Bill S. Cole University Center, beginning with a 12:30 p.m. check-in.  Students will have the opportunity to view the campus, meet with staff members from multiple departments on campus, and enroll with a faculty advisor. • Ada High School Band Boosters are raising money to help the support the quickly growing band program at Ada Public Schools. A pancake supper takes place from 5-7:30 p.m. at  Central Church of Christ Family LIfe Center, 820 Stadium Drive. Tickets are $5 each and donations are welcomed.

• Byng hosts open house at its town hall and fire department from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. at 110 Byng Avenue. Swearing in of elected officials takes place at 11 a.m. A meet-and-greet of the members of the volunteer fire department, emergency management, town and public works board, clerk and treasurer is from 11:15 a.m. until noon. Beginning at noon a fish fry will be served. Area residents have an opportunity to play Info Byngo from 12:30-4 p.m. for a chance to win door prizes. • NEC Code Update Class will be held at Pontotoc Technology Center,

601 W 33rd, from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. This class will satisfy the Oklahoma state mandatory six hour continuing education requirement for license renewal. This class is approved by the Oklahoma Construction Industries Board for Electrical journeymen and Electrical Contractors. Six hours of CEU (no lunch break). Instructor is David Jackson. Cost of class is $75 paid prior to course and participants must have a valid ID and current electrical license number. Bring a current NEC Code book.A minimum of six people is required for class. • Maud Coon, local author, hosts a book signing from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Ada Public Library for her new children’s book, I Am a Big Sis Now. This book that teaches the dangers of sibling rivalries and how ot resolve conflicts peacefully. The author holds a bachelor of arts degree in psychology from the College of New Rochelle in New York.
