St. Joseph Church will celebrate the liturgies of Holy Week beginning with Palm Sunday, March 24. Palm Sunday recalls Jesus's entrance into Jerusalem as the people waved palm branches. Parishioners will gather in Benedictine Hall on Sunday before Mass to have the blessing of the palms and then “process” to the church and continue with the celebration of Mass.
The Sacred Triduum is the three days that begin on Holy Thursday, March 28, at 7:30 p.m. with the Mass of the Lord’s supper. The custom of washing feet will also be a part of this liturgy recalling how Jesus washed the feet of his disciples as an example for all to do. After Mass all are invited to the parish hall for a time of prayer recalling Jesus’s time in the garden.
Good Friday, March 29, will begin at 7:30 p.m. This liturgical service begins in quiet. It reminds us that this was the time that the lambs were slaughtered in the Temple for the Passover feast. The ancient prayer is prayed and then a large cross is presented for all to come and honor. The rite concludes with holy communion and quiet time of waiting and preparation for the vigil begins.
Holy Saturday, March 30, begins at 8:30 p.m. outside the church for the service of light…lighting of the new fire and the paschal candle reminding us that Jesus is the light of the world. All gathered will enter into the church with lighted candles and the liturgy continues with Scripture stories of salvation history being proclaimed and new members are received into the church.
Easter Sunday, March 31, there will be two Masses, one at 11 a.m. and Spanish Mass at 2 p.m. to celebrate the resurrection of our Lord Jesus. The church keeps the celebration through the octave of Easter and then for 50 days until Pentecost.
