Foster youth invited to self-advocacy training event June 26 in Ada

Ada —

Youth in foster care ages 15 to 18 from 18 south-central and south-eastern Oklahoma counties are invited to enjoy free food, fun, entertainment and self-advocacy training at “Take Charge of Your Future — See More, Know More, Be More,” an outreach event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, June 26.

Youth are eligible to attend if they reside in Atoka, Bryan, Carter, Choctaw, Coal, Garvin, Hughes, Johnston, Love, Marshall, McClain, McIntosh, Murray, Pittsburg, Pushmataha, Pontotoc, Pottawatomie and Seminole counties.

Organizers expect about 50 participants for the event, to be held in the Bill S. Cole University Center at East Central University, 1100 E. 14th St. in Ada.

Highlights will include motivational speakers, entertainment, resource information and a youth panel on empowering teens by discussing strategies for self-advocacy.

Pre-registration is required by June 14 to allow time for organizers to prepare food and materials.

“We call the event ‘Take Charge of Your Future — See More, Know More, Be More’ because students can get information needed to make smart, informed decisions that allow them to take control of their own lives and their future,” vocational rehabilitation specialist Melissa Crabtree said.

Vocational Rehabilitation is a division of the Oklahoma Department of Rehabilitation Services (DRS), which coordinates with the Oklahoma Department of Human Services to improve participants’ chances for a healthy transition into adulthood and employment.

Students may pre-register online at www.okil.ou.edu/drstakecontrol-ada or by contacting Melissa Crabtree at mcrabtree@okdrs.gov or 580-310-5300.
