Ada —

Shelby Wilson, 15, Ada, is headed for the National Barrel Horse Association State Championship Finals in April 2013 at Shawnee.

A student at Byng School, she began riding in 2009 as a member of Ada Area Round up Club. Wilson advanced to Barrel Race Jack Pots and currently competes on three of her five horses. Snoop Dogg is a 10-year-old palomino gelding. Tia is a 7-year-old sorrel mare and Cowboy is a 13-year-old sorrel gelding.

"I have always had a love for horses and believe setting a goal and a dream will come true with lots of hard work, devoting time, maintaining a positive attitude, believing in yourself and most important believing in Jesus Christ," she said.

"I didn't have the money to go out ad buy a 'barrel horse' so I worked with only what I had. I pulled Snoop Dogg out of the pasture and trained him myself and started hauling him (to events) to get him seasoned and worked little odd jobs to pay for my entry fees.

"I have since won four championship buckles running in open classes. In November 2012, I won my first saddle and another championship buckle with my NBHA Youth class and placed third in the 4D open class for the district finals for the year."

"I owe special thanks to Jesus Christ as my savior my parents, Gary, my grandparents PaPa MeMe, nanny, Carl and Judy Wilson, and Vicki Nordan," said Wilson.

Wilson attends Byng School and Church of God Of Prophecy in Allen. She is a member of the NBHA District 5 (National Barrel Horse Association) and 2013 BBR member (Better Barrel Races).

Her parents are Glenn Wilson and Renee’ Wilson, both of Ada.
