The Ada News
Free tax return preparation will be offered again by the Ada AARP (American Association of Retired Persons) for taxpayers with middle and low incomes. This volunteer service has been offered in this area since the early 1970s.
The AARP Taxaide site will be at Ada Masonic Lodge Hall, 730 North Crestview, beginning on Monday, Feb. 4.
Operation hours in February will be Mondays and Thursdays, from 8 a.m. to noon and 1-5 p.m. Beginning in March the site will only be open on Mondays, at the same hours, through April 08, 2013.
All ages are welcome, and do not need to be members of AARP to be helped. Tax returns will be completed while taxpayer waits and e-filed the same day.
AARP Tax-Aide is the nation’s largest, free, volunteer-run tax counseling and preparation service. More than 35,000 volunteers, trained in cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service, helped more than 2,500,000 taxpayers last year file their federal, state, and local tax returns. The Ada site is one of more than 6,233 sites nationwide, and is one of the 5,200 sites where e-filing is offered.
Free electronic filing (e-file) will be available for all returns because this ensures a more accurate tax return and faster processing of tax refunds. Persons who owe taxes can e-file early and later mail the payment at their convenience anytime before April 15.
Taxpayers are asked to take with them their own picture ID and a Social Security card for every person listed on their tax return. Each person should also take their 2011 return, along with all their information for 2012. If the refund is to be direct deposited, a blank check will be necessary.
IMPORTANT NEW INFORMATION: The “out of scope” list of returns AARP cannot prepare has been expanded for 2012. Anyone with rental income or are self-employed, can have AARP prepare his or her return if it meets the following limitations:
1. RENTAL INCOME ..ONLY with ZERO expenses.
2. SELF-EMPLOYED..ONLY with no inventory, no employees and less than $5,000 in expenses.
AARP volunteers are not allowed to make any exceptions to these rules.
Local volunteers, in order to be certified to prepare taxes at the site, have attended this year’s training session in January and have passed a comprehensive test on tax preparation. The training was conducted by Andy Hood and Bette Cole, who are IRS trained instructors, along with guests from the Oklahoma Tax Commission.
Volunteers this year include Bob Ardiana, M.E. Carr, Bette Cole, Morris Gonsoulin, Andy Hood, Don Clark, Kurt Jackson, John Sassen, Frank Shanklin, Lanny Sliger, Cheryl Toby, Billie Redden, Anita Ardiana, Vestel Cole, Fran Henley, Joann Hood, Dee McKinney, Wanda Privett, and Ruth Ann Taylor.
Appointments are given to keep taxpayer’s waiting time at a minimum. For an appointment to have taxes prepared or questions answered, phone 580-332-3882.
