Chickasaw Cultural Center sets lecture series

Sulphur —

The Chickasaw Cultural Center presents a lecture series focused on Chickasaw history, language and culture.

Lectures will be presented by Chickasaw Nation Cultural Resource Specialists Brad Lieb and LaDonna Brown at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, Wednesday, Feb. 6 and Saturday, Feb. 9 in the Anoli’ Theatre on the cultural center campus. The topic will be “Chickasaw Homelands Prior to Removal.”

The event is free and open to the public.

The lecture series began in January with a presentation on ancient Chickasaw village names by Dr. John Dyson.

Dyson is a noted Chickasaw linguist and has worked with the Chickasaw Language department for several years. Dyson’s current studies include the study of Chickasaw language and how it has changed through time.  He has also spent much of his academic career teaching Spanish and Portuguese.

Dyson received his Ph. D. from the University of Kansas and taught at Indiana University in Bloomington for nearly 40 years.

Additional lectures are scheduled for 1 p.m. on March 13 and 16; April 17 and 20; and May 15 and 18.

The informative lectures about Chickasaws and their culture, span from their language to their original homelands and the Mississippian culture before the removal to Indian Territory.
