Brittney Barr runs barrels with one-eyed gelding

Shawnee — Brittney Barr is competing in barrels at the 2013 International Finals Youth Rodeo on a 9-year-old registered quarter horse named Braumbi.

Braumbi is not your average quarter horse — he has one eye. The right eye was kicked out when he was turned out with a pen of studs. The horse was a stud at Jud Little’s ranch and was bred for speed. He’s by Cash Not Credit and Nancy Ann Smith. He didn’t get a chance because he was so small, and Barr was given the chance to take him.

Barr acquired Braumbi when he was 6.

“My dad (Jim) rode him for the first six months because he spooked real easy,” said the 17-year-old from Ada. "At first, he was real skittish and I had to spend a lot of time warming him up. He’d buck me off a lot.”

Barr has been competing on him for four years: three times at the IFYR, three times in the short go at Josey Ranch. They won the MidSouth Rodeo Cowboy Association, and in general, he’s working just fine.

“I send him to his blind’s-eye barrel (right) first, and that works just fine. He always goes into the pen to work but spooks at things behind him."

Barr hasn’t had the best first couple years at the IFYR.

“I choke up,” she admits, but this year is different. “My trainer (Kelsey Deal Boozer) gave me a pep talk and told me that I’d been riding good, and I needed to just do the same thing.”

Barr, who started competing when she was 9, has a trainer in her mother as well. Nancy Wells Berry was a contestant at the NFR and the IFR.
