Thomsen favors local school control

Ada —

Rep. Todd Thomsen favors abolishing a series of educational reforms and returning control to local school officials, he said Monday.

The Ada Republican said he believes recent reforms including the A-F report cards, a new teacher evaluation system and a mandate that all third-graders pass reading exams are creating more pressure for students and teachers alike.

“I think the residual effect of that is that you lose creativity,” he said. “You lose an aspect of fun, which school should be fun. And in the process of trying to be better at science and math and reading and those kinds of things, we’ve lost art and music — those elective and those peripheral courses that actually are the drivers for a lot of kids to learn some of the core courses.”
