Ada — Kiwanis announces 2014 Swim Safe schedule

ADA — The Kiwanis Club of Greater Ada has released its summer 2014 Swim Safe Program for Youth. The program is a certified Red Cross Learn to Swim program. Classes will begin June 9.

Tadpole class is for infants age 6 months to 1 year. The cost is $30 per child, and children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who will be required to swim with the student. The class is designed to initiate children to the water, develop high comfort around water and a readiness to swim, and enable parents to supervise children's aquatic activities and help teach their children to swim.

Polywog is for toddlers age 1 to 3 years and also costs $30 per child. A parent or guardian must also swim with the student. The class is a continuation of the Tadpole class and is designed for children who need to overcome their fear of water.

Bullfrog is for children ages 3 to 5 years, and the cost is $30. The class continues the previous classes and teaches children how to enter the water and practice rhythmic breathing, flutter kicks, glides and beginning strokes.

Level 1-5 is available for $45. Level 1 is water exploration for children with no swimming instruction or needing assistance to overcome their fear of water. Level 2 is fundamental skills; level 3 is stroke development; level 4 works to improve the stroke; and level 5 is to refine the stroke.

A guard class is available for $65 which builds on level five skills and helps students work on in-water and backboard rescues.

Registration is from 9 a.m. to noon June 6 at Glenwood Pool, 9 a.m. to noon June 20 at Wintersmith Pool and 6 to 8 p.m. July 7 at Glenwood Pool.
