Lackeys celebrate 30 years of reunions

Ada — The 30th annual reunion of Lee Bryan and Della Silvertooth Lackey family was celebrated June 29 at Wintersmith Lodge in Ada where  the first reunion was held in 1984.

Bryan and Della, both deceased, moved to Fittstown in January 1941 and reared seven children there. They owned and operated Lackey’s Grocery Store in Fitts-town for more than 22 years.

The theme of this year’s reunion was Star Spangled 30th Annual Lackey Reunion. The date for the reunion was significant because it was Bryan and Della’s anniversary date in 1922.  Janelle Robinson presented a copy of their wedding license to each family member.

Coordinated by Lisa Lackey and Sheila Hall, the reunion was attended by 55 members including the siblings, their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and guests. The group began arriving at 8 a.m. for coffee, doughnuts, visiting and fellowship.  A large, colorful banner, provided by Lewis and Geneva Lackey, announced the Lackey Reunion. Tami Thompson decorated the tables with a patriotic theme. Isaac Thompson asked the blessing before pizza was served for lunch.  Every family provided a dessert.

Kara and Garrett Greuel led participation in Minute-to-Win-It games.  Mitch Robinson served as moderator for the program which opened with Sarah Thompson leading in the Pledge of Allegiance.  Lisa Lackey led the group in sharing favorite memories of past reunions and days at the Fittstown Lackey home. Blake Walters conducted a songfest with words written to familiar tunes by Janelle Robinson for past reunions. James Lackey passed the Lackey Spirit Award trophy to Mitch Robinson. The “Cup Song” was presented by Mitch, Rachel and McKenzie Robinson, Garrett Greuel and Sarah Thompson.  Lisa Lackey recapped the first reunion in 1984 and gave an audio of the event to each family. Ron Lackey shared Jay LeFlore’s “Hissing in the Pit” story. After Sarah and Isaac Thompson sang, each child 12 and under was given a bag of prizes by Janelle Robinson.  Mitch Robinson presented key chains to various members, and Ron Lackey conducted a hat give-away. Sheila Hall and Lisa Lackey surprised the siblings with commemorative T-shirts listing each family member. Each family shared an update, and a group photo was taken. Blake Walters and Mitch Robinson led the group in singing “The Old Rugged Cross.”

Lisa Lackey shared Lackey Trivia.  There are 120 descendants from Bryan and Della, 17 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and 21 great-great-grandchildren with three new babies expected. The Lackey Reunion has been held in 16 different locations and at Wintersmith Park five times.  The Lackey family lives in 10 different states.

Janelle Robinson made a surprise presentation to Lisa Lackey: a necklace with a heart-warming story. Lisa’s father, L.B., brought the amethyst pendant necklace home from World War II, but Lisa had never seen it. Marked “Czechoslovakia,” the necklace had broken in pieces through the years. Lisa’s cousin, Angie Bovaird, a jewelry designer, re-created the necklace especially for Lisa.

In the annual silent auction, family members bid on items brought and raised more than $700.00 for the Reunion Fund.  Interesting items included Lewis Lackey’s handcrafted cedar pieces.
