Area youth build confidence and teamwork at camp

Kingston — On May 2-4, ten members of the STAND (Students Taking A New Direction) Coalition of Pontotoc County attended youth camp in Kingston, OK. The students spent the weekend doing team building activities with Pontotoc County Drug Free Coalition (PCDFC) staff.

The youth challenged themselves by participating in a high ropes course. The course consisted of walking on a highline wire, climbing across a rope spider web and then jumping from a pole onto a platform. The kids learned to communicate and depend on their partner below. Once they reached the end of the course they had the opportunity to zip line through the trees.

Holli Witherington, Drug Free Communities grant director, stated “It was great to see the support and encouraging words they offered one another. You could really see them come together as a team.”

The kids also had the experience of climbing to the top of a twenty-three-foot power pole. After reaching the top and a standing position, they jumped to ring a bell suspended in mid-air.

“Two of them decided to do it blindfolded. They all did awesome! We are so proud of their courage,” reports AshLee Griffin, Drug Free Communities grant coordinator.

The group also spent time doing team activities such as balancing a teeter-totter as a group. Staff and youth worked together to find a balance, much like they must do within the STAND coalition. They wrapped up the weekend with a bonfire, s’mores and beach volleyball.

The Pontotoc County Drug Free Coalition’s, STAND coalition is open to youth ages 12-18 in Pontotoc County.
