Welcome center features work of Chickasaw artist

Ada —

The Chickasaw Nation Welcome Center is currently displaying original pieces of artwork from Oklahoma native artist Christine Brown. Brown is the second emerging artist featured at the center. Her photography and canvassed photo prints are now on exhibit through the end of June.

“The Welcome Center gives us the chance to share the talent and heart of Chickasaws with visitors from across the country,” said director of tourism of the Chickasaw Nation, Paige Williams. “Throughout the year, we will rotate a variety of different artwork from local artists.”

Brown’s scenic photography showcases Pontotoc and Johnston County. She captures the essence of nature through flowing streams, blooming cacti and forest creatures. Sixteen pieces are available for visitors to view and purchase.

Recently, Brown’s artwork has been in juried art shows throughout the state including, Momentum: Art Doesn’t Stand Still in Tulsa and the Paseo Artists Association 2013 Annual Members’ Show in Oklahoma City.

She won the 2011 and 2012 Purchase Award from both Citizens Bank of Ada and Vision Bank in the Ada Artists Association Member Show. In addition, she is the proud recipient of the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition Professional Basics Grant in 2012. This grant is given to promising Oklahoma artists to assist in the professional development of their careers.

The Welcome Center is located at the southwest corner of exit 55 on I-35. Nearly 29,000 cars per day travel through the intersection. The 5,500-square-foot facility opened in November and provides trip-planning kiosks, a lounge area, vending machines, an outdoor playground and a dog park for visitors. Hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Brown’s pieces range in size from 11 x 14 to 8 x 8 and in price from $50 to $150. For more information about the center call (580) 369-4222 or visit Chickasaw Country’s website at ChickasawCountry.com.
