What current worries would fall to the wayside? Answer: All of them. What petty jealousies would we hold onto? Answer: None of them.
Are there one or more people we love who should hear it before the final hour arrives? Are there people to whom we need to express forgiveness, if not for their sake, for our own peace of mind? Is there anyone we’ve wronged who ought to hear us say we’re sorry? No doubt one or more of those fits all of us.
The point is not to be morbid. New Year’s Eve will still find boys popping firecrackers as 2013 dawns. Earth will continue tracking around the sun long after we’re gone.
But during this hectic Christmas season as we hustle around in our little worrisome and busy worlds, the best use of the Mayan calendar might be to employ it in briefly giving true perspective to our lives and those we love.
