Ex-Thunder announcer faces 6 counts in child sex case

Ada — Six counts of child sexual abuse have been filed in Pontotoc County against Jim Miller, a former Byng High School graduate and ex-public address announcer for the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Pontotoc County charges are more severe than ones leveled in Oklahoma County. The local charges allege at least one of two victims was asked — and complied with — a request to touch  Miller's penis, court records show.

Miller, looking thin and dressed in blue jeans and tennis shoes, appeared Tuesday afternoon before Pontotoc District Judge Tom Landrith. Bond was set at $100,000. An Oklahoma City bail bond company bonded Miller out of jail at approximately 3:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

Miller’s Oklahoma City attorney, Mac Martin, argued for a $50,000 bond.

Martin said Miller is now residing in Pontotoc County and was “undergoing counseling sessions to address some issues,” thus minimizing his flight risk.

Assistant District Attorney Jim Tillson sought $150,000 bond, pointing out the charges in the county were much more serious than ones Miller faces in Oklahoma County where Miller is charged with committing three lewd acts in front of a boy, age 8, who told a department of human services investigator Miller would masturbate in front of him while viewing pornography on a computer.

The charges arising in Pontotoc County allege Miller exposed himself and masturbated in front of two girls from Jan. 1, 2000,  to Jan. 1, 2007. Miller, a local celebrity by virtue of his former Thunder job, resided in Pontotoc County during those dates. He later moved to Harrah where he was a tennis coach at Harrah High School.

He has been suspended with pay from that job and is free on $30,000 bond from Oklahoma County on the three counts pending there.

In Pontotoc County, the alleged sexual acts were committed against two young girls, identified as Jane Doe 1 and Jane Doe 2, in court documents to protect their identities. It is alleged Miller masturbated in front of the girls and asked both of the girls to “touch his penis.”

It is also alleged in Pontotoc County court documents Miller asked one of the victims to “take a nap” with him. It is alleged this phrase was a term used by Miller as code words for the young girl — approximately age 5 at the time — to fully disrobe and for Miller to fully disrobe and then “masturbate while looking at pornography on television and looking at the private body parts” of the victim. He would also ask the young girl to touch him, as alleged in other counts filed in district court Tuesday morning.

It is also alleged in court documents at least one of the girls complied with the request to touch Miller’s genitals.

All counts against Miller, if he is convicted, carry penalties ranging from one year in the county jail to life in prison and fines ranging from $500 to $5,000.
