Mother gets 11 years in prison for leaving infant in car

GREENVILLE, Texas — A mother has been sentenced to prison after she left her infant son alone in a hot car and didn't to tell doctors about it, which prosecutors said may have led to the child's death.

Sheryl Ann Jackson of Greenville pleaded guilty in July to one count of manslaughter in connection with the death of 6-month-old Tytus Hoskins last December.

A jury sentenced Jackson on Friday to 11 years in prison. Prosecutors alleged that for two days, Jackson didn’t tell doctors about leaving her child in the car, and that may have contributed to his death.

Jackson had initially been charged with murder, but agreed to plead guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter.

According to police, outdoor temperatures reached 81 degrees on Dec. 1, 2012, when Jackson left her baby in the car alone for two hours. When Jackson retrieved the boy from the car, she sought medical help. She told doctors that the child felt hot, but didn’t tell them the baby had been left inside a car until two days later, police said.

The boy was taken by helicopter to a Dallas hospital where he died.

Details for this story were reported by The Herald-Banner in Greenville, Texas.
