The separate roads Ada and Byng took to open the fast-pitch playoffs will converge in Thursday’s opener of the Class 4A Regional Tournament at Byng.
Ada (21-9) will face Byng (25-11 and ranked No. 19) at noon Thursday to continue a rivalry that is quickly becoming one of the hottest in the state. The Lady Cougars needed three games to beat the Lady Pirates in district tournaments the past two years, and they rallied to win an extra-inning thriller, 7-6, at Byng in their only regular-season meeting this fall.
“It’s a different team, a different year and different circumstances,” second-year Byng coach Andi Grissom said when asked about the playoff rematch with Ada. “We’re just a few miles apart, and we figured to see them sometime.
“We had them beat last time (Byng led 6-3 with two outs and nobody on base in the top of the seventh) and couldn’t close the deal,” she added. “We wanted another shot, and we got it.”
