The Ada High boys basketball team will be looking to defend its title when the Cougars open play in the Oklahoma Baptist University Bison Invitational Thursday afternoon in Shawnee.
The Cougars were voted the No. 1 seed for the 2012 edition of the tournament, just ahead of second-seed Shawnee, and will face Meeker in a first-round matchup at 12:15 p.m.
"We had a seeding meeting last week, and the other coaches believed everything I told them about our team, and they believed me," said head coach Ron Anderson. "We will open up with Meeker again this year."
The Bulldogs from Class 3A began the season at 1-1, dropping a 70-53 decision to Prague (No. 16 in Class 3A) before earning a road win over local squad Konawa by a 58-52 count. Other teams in the field include three-seed Perkins-Tryon, Bethel, McLoud, Newcastle and Chandler.
"I feel the field will be better this year. I believe any of the top six teams could win the tournament." Anderson said. "Defending our championship at OBU will not come easy."
The Cougars return five players with considerable experience from a year ago: John Stout, Dakota Blackwell, Walker Whitworth, David Forbes and standout post player Cory Kilby. Kilby and Forbes also give Ada a pair of 6-6 players in the paint.
