Ada —

Four Ada High seniors have been selected for All-State  Honor Chorus — Zach Garcia, Maghen Mann and Jack Malm, Mixed Chorus, and Kelli Hansen, Women’s Chorus.

Under the direction of Vocal Music and Performing Arts  instructors Janet Humphrey and Nancy Forbes, assisted by Beverly Ballagh, the foursome have undergone the rigorous audition process to be selected for this year’s All-State Honor Chorus and perform at the Oklahoma Music Educators’ Convention held in Tulsa in January.

Garcia, the son of Skye and Sarah Garcia, has studied piano for 14 years and has composed for the past 12.

He has won numerous state and regional piano composition  contests and two national composition contests.  He has one piano piece that has been published by Alfred Publishing Company.

Garcia was also selected for ECOCDA All-District Honor Chorus. He is in his first year of vocal music as a member of Ada High’s Performing Arts. Garcia, also a member of the basketball team, plans to attend either East Central University or the University of Oklahoma for a music education or Spanish education degree.

Hansen, the daughter of Robin Hansen and the late Bruce Hansen, has been selected for ECOCDA District Honor Choir for three years.

She has been awarded superior ratings in District Vocal Solo and Ensemble, State Vocal Solo and Ensemble, and District Piano Solo and Ensemble from 2008-2011. She has been in Vocal Music and Performing Arts at Ada High for three years.

Malm, is the son of Dennis and Melissa Malm.  He has earned ECOBDA All-District band honors with his trombone in grades seven through 12. In addition, he has earned the Oklahoma Federation of Music Clubs junior festival state winner honors in both 2005 and 2006 in the category of piano duet.

Malm was the 2008-2010 Inspiration Point Fine Arts Colony Piano Solo Competition winner and Piano Concerto winner. He is in his first year in Vocal Music and Performing Arts at Ada High School.

He was also selected for the Vocal Music All-District Honor Chorus and was a member of the Ada High Mixed Ensemble which earned a superior at Little Dixie Vocal Contest.

Malm is also a member of the swim team.

Mann, the daughter of Karen and John Mann, has been selected to All-District Choir from ninth through 12th grade.  She has also been selected to Junior High All-State Choir in ninth grade, All-State Women’s Choir in 11th grade as well as this year’s selection to the All-State Mixed Choir.

Mann has earned superior ratings in both vocal solo and ensemble at both District and State from her freshman year to her senior year. She also rated superior at this fall's Little Dixie vocal contest.

In addition, she was a member of both the Ada High Mixed and Ada High Women’s Ensemble who achieved superior ratings at Little Dixie contest. Mann has been a member of the Ada High Choir for three years. She plans to attend ECU where she will minor in music and continue to enjoy singing in the choir.

This process involves learning the four very difficult choral works that were selected as this year’s audition pieces.  The first round auditions involved thousands of choral students in four different regions of the state.

From these, approximately 800 are selected to advance to the second round held at UCO in Edmond.  After this difficult audition, approximately 150 students from across the state and all classes of schools are selected for the All-State Mixed Chorus or the Women’s Chorus.

Students then rehearse with a nationally reknowned clinician and perform at the Oklahoma Music Educators’ Convention held in Tulsa in January.
