High school recruitment under way at PTC

Ada —

Pontotoc Technology Center is recruiting high school students for the 2011-2012 school year. In January more than 500 sophomores toured Pontotoc Technology Center campus to see what career majors are offered.

The following career majors are available to high school students: Architecture and  construction formerly known as heavy equipment operator, business, management and administration formerly known as business and  information technology, health science formerly known as health careers certification, licensed practical nurse, human services formerly known as cosmetology, information technology formerly known as computer information systems, and transportation, distribution, and logistics formerly known as automotive service technology.

During the sophomore tours students experience hands-on shadowing opportunities. Students are asked to choose the career major of their choice. They spend two hours in the career major performing hands-on activities.

Once the students have shadowed the career majors they are asked to fill out a short survey regarding their shadowing experience. When the completed survey is turned in, the sudents are given a parting gift.

The purpose of the shadowing experience is to help the students determine if they would like to attend PTC their junior year.

High school students can attend PTC for three hours a day their junior and senior year. This enables high school students to either begin their career path early or to earn certifications that will allow them to seek better employment opportunities while they are in college.

PTC offers a career tech scholarship for students who are interested in attending PTC after they graduate high school.

Students who will be a junior in high school in PTC’s district starting in August or anyone interested in becoming a student at PTC may join the tour Monday, Feb. 27, from 4-7 p.m. at meet-and-greet night.
